E27, E14, G9 or GU10? A Simple Guide to Bulb Fittings

Screw, bayonet, pin or twist-lock: how to recognise each bulb fitting, which bulbs to buy, and why UK homes need to check before ordering.
Crystal chandelier with candle bulbs

You have found the perfect light, and now the details on the box say E14 or G9. Here is a clear guide to the most common bulb fittings, so you always buy the right bulb first time.

E27: the standard screw fitting

E27, also called ES (Edison Screw), has a 27 mm screw base. It is the most common fitting for pendants and ceiling lights and offers the widest choice of bulbs, from classic shapes to decorative filament bulbs.

E14: the small screw fitting

E14, or SES (Small Edison Screw), has a 14 mm screw base. It is typically used for candle bulbs in chandeliers and for smaller wall lights.

G9: the compact pin capsule

G9 bulbs are small capsules with two looped pins that push straight in. Their compact size makes them ideal for crystal chandeliers and sculptural designs where the bulb needs to stay discreet.

GU10: the twist-lock spot

GU10 bulbs have two short, thick pins. You push them in and twist to lock. They are common in spotlights, downlights and some wall sconces.

An important note for UK homes: B22 bayonet

Many UK homes use B22 bayonet bulbs, which push in and twist with two side pins. A B22 bulb will not fit an E27 screw fitting, even though they look similar in size. Always check the fitting listed on the product page before buying bulbs.

Fitting How it fits Typical use
E27 (ES) 27 mm screw Pendants, ceiling lights
E14 (SES) 14 mm screw Chandeliers, wall lights
G9 Two looped pins, push in Crystal chandeliers, compact designs
GU10 Two pins, push and twist Spotlights, sconces
B22 Bayonet, push and twist Traditional UK fittings

Integrated LED: no bulb at all

Many modern designs use integrated LEDs built into the light itself. There is nothing to buy or replace, and the light can follow sculptural shapes that a bulb never could.

Dimming

If you want to dim a light, you need both a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. Not every LED bulb is dimmable, so check the packaging.

The essentials

Check the fitting on the product page before buying bulbs, remember that B22 bayonet bulbs do not fit E27 lights, and choose a warm white LED bulb for the cosiest result.
